General Description

This article walks you through setting up Apple's built-in email program to use Purdue's Exchange server.

Step by Step Instructions

Note: These instructions were made using Mail 2.0, which comes with OS X 10.4. Different versions of mail will look slightly different, but the instructions will be the same.

Note: Exchange accounts are only given to Purdue faculty, staff, and student staff. For instructions to configure your Mailhub email, please see
[KB001418] How do I configure Apple Mail (Mac OS X) for my Purdue Email?

Note: Apple Mail will only pull your email from the Exchange Server so you can read it. You will not be able to move messages to other folders or delete messages from Apple Mail. If you wish to synchronize your calendar and address book, or you would like more control over your mail folders, you will need to use Microsoft Entourage instead.

Step 1: Launch Mail. If it's not already in your dock, it will be in your Applications folder.

Step 2a: If this is your first time running Mail or there are just no email accounts set up yet, you will see this welcome screen. Just click "Continue" and skip to step 3.

Step 2b: If you already have an email account set up in Mail (such as a Gmail or Yahoo account), Mail will open normally. Open the "Mail" menu and select "Preferences". From there, click on "Accounts" and you will see the screen below. Just click on the " " button in the lower-left corner and then continue with Step 3.

Step 3: You will now see the screen below and need to enter the following information:

Account Type: Exchange
Account Description: (whatever you want, usually "Purdue Exchange")
Full Name: Your name as you want it to appear on your outgoing messages
Email Address: Your @exchange.purdue.edu email address.

Step 4: Click "Continue" when you're done . You will now see the screen below and need to enter the following information:

Incoming Mail Server: exchange.purdue.edu
User Name: Your Purdue Career Account user name
Password: Your Purdue Career Account password
Outlook Web Access Server: exchange.purdue.edu

Step 5: Click "Continue" when you're done. Mail will now attempt to automatically configure the rest of the incoming Server options. If it succeeds, continue at step 6.

If you get an error, click "Continue" and and make the screen that appears look like the one shown below and click "Continue":

Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL): Checked
Authentication: Password

Step 6: You will now see the Outgoing Server configuration screen below and need to enter the following information:

Outgoing Mail Server: smtp.purdue.edu
Use Authentication: Checked
User Name:
Your Career Account alias/user name
Password: Your Career Account password

Step 7: Click "Continue" when done and Mail will attempt to automatically configure security settings. As before, if it succeeds, continue at step 8.

If it fails, click "Continue" and make the resulting screen look like the one shown below, then click "Continue":

Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL): Checked
Authentication: Password

Step 8: You will now see the screen below. Verify your settings are correct and click "Continue".

Step 9: Click "Done" to begin using Mail.

Troubleshooting

If you are off campus and cannot send mail to non-Purdue email addresses:

  1. Open the "Mail" menu
  2. Select "Preferences"
  3. Go to the "Accounts" section
  4. Click on the "Server Settings" button under "Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP)" on the "Account Information" tab
  5. Make sure that "Server Port" is "587" and "Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL)" is checked
  6. Click "OK"
  7. Close Preferences and then Quit Mail
  8. Open Mail and try again
You may see a "Calendar" folder in your folder tree. This will not bring up your Exchange calendar, unfortunately. To get your calendar and address book, use Microsoft Entourage 2004 instead of Apple Mail.
