General Description

This article outlines how to connect to a network printer on PAL, ResNet, or connected via a VPN.

Step by Step Instructions

  1. Open the Start Menu and choose Settings, then Printers and Faxes (or Control Panel, Settings, then Printers and Faxes).
  2. Click Add Printer.
  3. Click the radio button next to "A network printer..." and click Next.
  4. Click the radio button next to "Connect to this printer..." In the field next to "Name", type \\printers.ics.purdue.edu\printername -- for example, \\printers.ics.purdue.edu\harrc101 for the printer in Harrison Hall.
A list of ITaP lab printers located on campus can be found here: [KB000633] What are the names of the campus printers?

Troubleshooting

Some common pitfalls to be aware of:

  • You may be unable to connect due to complications with firewalls. You will have to either temporarily disable your firewall to add the printer or add the print server to your list of accepted IP addresses.
  • Note that with the new Uniprint system (where it tracks your printing fees on campus lab printers), the printer will show up as "paused". This is perfectly normal and the printer will print normally.
  • If you have Windows XP Home, as it does not give you the option of saving your network password when mapping the printer, it may become necessary to delete and re-map the printer each time you log on. XP Professional is not affected by this problem.
  • If you've changed your career account password and, when trying to print, it does not prompt you to update your stored password, you will need to delete and re-map the printer using these instructions.
