General Description
This article will give step by step instructions for configuring Outlook 2003 to use RPC over HTTPS via Outlook 2003 without creating a VPN connection each time.
Step by Step Instructions
Make sure you are using Outlook 2003 SP2
- You can check this by going to "Help > About Microsoft Office Outlook" and reading the top line. Should look like "Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 (11.xxxx.xxxx) SP2"
Connect to the Purdue VPN using the following instructions
Outlook Configuration (MUST be using Outlook 2003 with SP2 installed)
- Click Start > Settings > Control Panel, then double-click on "Mail"
- Click on the "Show Profiles" button
- Click the "Add" button to create a new profile
- Select "Add a new e-mail account" and click Next
- Select "Microsoft Exchange Server" and click Next
- Type "exchange.purdue.edu" in the "Microsoft Exchange Server" field
- Make sure that "Use Cached Exchange Mode" is CHECKED
- Type your career account alias (username) in the "User Name" field
- DO NOT HIT CHECK NAME YET
- Click the "More Settings" button
- Go to the "Connection" tab
- Check the box for "Connect to my Exchange mailbox using HTTP"
- Click on "Exchange Proxy Settings" button
- Type "exchange.purdue.edu" in the "Use this URL to connect to my Proxy Server for Exchange" field
- Check "Connect using SSL only" and "Mutually authenticate the session when connecting with SSL"
- Type "msstd:exchange.purdue.edu" in the "Principle name for Proxy Server" field
- Select "Basic Authentication" from the drop down field for "Use this Authentication when connecting to my Proxy Server for Exchange (the "Connect using SSL only" box will automatically be grayed out after you make this selection)
- Click OK, OK, Next, and Finish to complete the setup
Start Microsoft Outlook and login with your OnePurdue account
Once Outlook has synchronized your entire mailbox and you close Outlook, you will no longer need to connect to the VPN before starting Outlook.
Troubleshooting
Make sure you are using Outlook 2003 SP2
- You can check this by going to "Help > About Microsoft Office Outlook" and reading the top line. Should look like "Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 (11.6568.6568) SP2"
Make sure you are using Windows XP SP2 with ALL critical updates installed
You must use the VPN connection the first time you use Outlook 2003 with RPC over HTTPS.
